We&#8217;ve looked at the sort of foods eaten during\u00a0the reigns of <a href=\"http:\/\/aniam.co.uk\/blog\/off-with-her-quiche\/\">Henry VIII<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/aniam.co.uk\/blog\/more-tudor-food\/\">Elizabeth I<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/aniam.co.uk\/blog\/all-the-sweet-things\/\">George I<\/a>, the latter including the introduction and rise of <a href=\"http:\/\/aniam.co.uk\/blog\/black-magic\/\">chocolate<\/a>. This week is the turn of George III. Yes, the mad one \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>George was not a well man, suffering from bouts of madness (porphyria), when he wasn&#8217;t allowed to use a knife and fork for fear he might harm himself, so his diet consisted of dishes that could be eaten with a spoon, e.g., \u00a0soups and jellies. In addition to this, he was a man who liked plain food, unlike his predecessors, so he was known as the frugal king. In reality, the frugality was somewhat relative and from what I have seen of the cuisine of this period, it was actually quite rich, with a lot of butter, cream and eggs.<\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s recipes included <em>Barley Soup<\/em>, which was fairly plain and simple, but I really didn&#8217;t fancy it since it is far too warm for soup. The additional recipes were for <em>Asparagus Rolls<\/em> and <em>Spritzen<\/em>, a kind of muffin. I&#8217;m quite partial to asparagus, so here&#8217;s my effort:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4702\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 308px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/aniam.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/asparagus.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4702 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/aniam.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/asparagus-300x300.jpg?resize=300%2C300\" alt=\"Asparagus Rolls\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/aniam.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/asparagus.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/aniam.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/asparagus.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/aniam.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/asparagus.jpg?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Asparagus Rolls<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Quite a simple dish of cooked asparagus in a savoury custard, served in scooped out and fried french rolls. I haven&#8217;t bothered posting the full recipe\u00a0but if you want it, just ask. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>We are currently experiencing a heatwave so I haven&#8217;t had a chance to do the Spritzen either. I&#8217;ll catch up with those at a later date.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s all for this week, folks.
