I Came, I Saw, I Knat

With the Clues only taking a couple of days and then the enforced hiatus on the MKAL, due to there being no clues at all for the version I am making for a whole FORTNIGHT, my restless hands have turned to other projects.

Monday saw a very quick knit that has been in my queue for absolutely aaaaaaages, namely the Medievalesque neck warmer. The original pattern is a bit minimal and stood some improvement as the lace section was way too short, so I added a few more rows and altered some of the existing lace pattern. I used DROPS Eskimo, but any super bulky yarn will work just fine. Here is how mine came out:

Medievalesque Revised

Cast on 37 st with 8mm needles and Twisted German Cast On using your main or contract yarn, as preferred. (If you want to make a smaller size, CO 35st and omit the first and last knit stitch on the charts).

Knit the next 3 rows so that you have a garter stitch edge.
Switch to your main yarn. This is now your RS (if you prefer the look of the other side, knit another row in contrast before switching).

Always knit the first and last 3 stitches to give a garter stitch edge. Work main section in stocking stitch (i.e., knit RS and purl WS) until the piece measures 6″ or your desired neck length. If you are using circular needles, you can easily check the length/stretch to ensure the length is right.

Increase Row: Between edging stitches, k1, *(yo, k1) *repeat to end. (67 stitches)

Switch to 10mm needles. Purl.

Work lace section as below. The lace section is symmetrical

Continue to Knit first and last three stitches of each row for the border. Pattern instructions exclude this border.

*Repeat sections in brackets eight times.

Row 1: k3, (yo, p1, yo, k5)*, yo, p1, yo, k3 (73 st. excl. border)
Row 2 and all even rows: work as per pattern – purl the purls (RS knits),  knit the knits (RS purl) and purl YOs.
Row 3: k2, yo, (k1, p1, k1, yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo)*, k1, p1, k1, yo, k2
Row 5: k1, yo, k1, (k1, p1, k2, yo, s2kp, yo, k1)* , k1, p1, k2, yo, k1
Row 7: k2, yo, (ssk, p1, k2tog, yo, k3, yo)*, ssk, p1, k2tog, yo, k2
Row 9: k3, (yo, sk2p, yo, k5)*, yo sk2p, yo, k3

Lace Chart

Repeat boxed section 8 times.

Work 3 more rows in st.st.

Switch back to contrast yarn (if using) and work 3-4 rows in garter stitch (all knit). Cast off loosely using a 12mm needle or a bit of slack.

Add buttons along one side of the garter stitch edging. There are no button holes as the stitches are large enough to push a button through.

I’m hoping that I haven’t made any mistakes in the pattern because I knitted the piece first and then tried to work out what I’d done afterwards, so please let me know if you spot any errors. Otherwise, enjoy! 😀

In other news, I have been using the rest of the break in the MKAL to do some crochet, namely the Renaissance Beauty throw. Again, with some alterations inspired by other projects to firm up the “border”). With the weather turning colder, the blanket is growing nicely (currently 5×5 squares) and promises to be nicely toasty 🙂

It’s a work in progress and needs blocking yet 🙂
